Feral cat program threatened by animal control costs

At the point in time, more than half the animals which arrived where put down, eight to 10,000 a year. The county feels the best way to lessen the animal population over time, is an aggressive spay and neuter program. So the county figured out what the charges totaled, divided it up according to each jurisdictions participation and sent them each a bill. The city of Tucson, which voted not to participate, got the largest bill, about $830,000. Kozachik believes the county should have notified the jurisdictions before going public. But the county feels the jurisdictions should have seen it coming. There is likely some embarrassment to go along with this back and forth for that, but there may be a lesson to learn.

Summit County Animal Control Acknowledges World Rabies Day

In acknowledgment of World Rabies Day, Sept. 28, the Summit County Animal Control and Shelter is urging pet owners to make sure their animals’ vaccinations are up to date to avoid the spread of the fatal disease. And all Summit County residents and visitors are encouraged to stay away from physical contact with wildlife and unfamiliar animals.“Rabies is a global problem that we can all play a role in defeating locally,” Animal Control director Lesley Hall said in a news release. “By taking a few simple preventive measures and common-sense precautions, we can prevent the spread of rabies in our own community and the world beyond.”The rabies virus travels from the site of a bite or scratch along the nerves to the brain, where it multiplies and causes inflammation. Symptoms of rabies include fever, headache, trouble swallowing, cerebral dysfunction, anxiety, confusion, abnormal behavior, insomnia and delirium. Once a person exhibits signs of the disease, it is almost always fatal, according to the CDC. However, post-exposure prophylaxis is nearly 100 percent successful in stopping the virus if it’s administered shortly after a bite or scratch or other publicity to an infected animal.

Can Assad's offer to sell pure snake oil become the solution?

Syria’s foreign minister took to the UN podium yesterday posing as a statesman, only to seek to market the Assad brand of snake oil politics to a watching world.
Addressing the world body, Walid Al Mualem said the western and Arab alliance that is attacking ISIL in both Iraq and Syria were part of the same battle as the Assad regime. They are opposing the same enemy, battling in the same trenches.
By focusing on the moderate opposition groups in Syria, the Assad regime ensured that only the most extreme groups survived.
All US and Arab allies will have done is act as Assad’s gardener: clearing the weeds once they grow to be unruly, but leaving intact the surroundings for them to grow again.
The regime of Bashar Al Assad is not a saviour, a fellow fighter or an ally. Seeking to sell the world snake oil, Assad’s emissaries pretend to recommend an answer. But Bashar Al Assad is the architect of the ISIL ailment: he cannot now pretend to sell the cure.

Can the squirrels see the invisible?

When squirrels are burying acorns, is it a symbol of an cold front that's about to take place? I believe so, due to the fact, reindeer's antlers grow longer when it snows, and seals can develop an extra layer of blubber suggesting that winter will be very cold providing a lot of snow. Is it an natural instinct that animals have? Animals seem to pickup on seasons and mother Earth a lot quicker than we do, they even outsmart the machines sometimes.
